Unisex Toilets

Design Features

Fully enclosed toilet and shower cubicles are the Department for Education’s design standard for student toilets and change rooms in new schools and major refurbishments.

  • All unisex toilets are self-contained with hand basin, hand dryer, full height walls and doors with no gaps providing visual and acoustic privacy to students using the toilets.
  • The toilets are designed to reduce the need for time spent in shared toilet areas, minimising opportunities provided by traditional toilet areas where anti-social behaviour (bullying, vandalism) can take place.
  • Groups of toilets are located in each building and learning community, so dedicated toilet facilities are accessible for students in each age group.
  • There are also separate primary and secondary toilets in the Gym.
  • Toilet areas have glass doors at the internal and external entrances with no blind spots to allow passive supervision over the whole shared area.
  • Toilets are located centrally to each learning community to increase the amount of passive supervision from people walking past.
  • Fully enclosed toilet and shower cubicles are the Department for Education’s design standard for student toilets and change rooms in new schools and major refurbishments.
Safety

The safety of our students is our top priority.

  • Each individual unisex toilet is accessible from a common circulation area.
  • All toilet doors can be unlocked by staff with a key in case of emergency or in the unlikely event a child becomes stuck in the toilet.
  • Assistance alarms are available in the accessible toilets.
  • A buddy system will be in place within the junior and primary year levels, so a child can seek help from a staff member if their buddy has trouble opening the door.
